In your own words, what exactly is Twitter?

Twitter is a new means and style of communication between friends, which also supplements (not replace) current things like IM and email.

Why would somebody use Twitter?

For quick, short and hasslefree broadcasts about where they're going - then they can be surprised when they bump into friends there later.
